The first legal product ad to run on television was a 10-second spot for Bulova watches on July 1, 1941. This was the day that commercial licenses granted by the FCC to televisions stations went into effect.
The Bulova commercial ran on WBNT, a station owned by NBC, just before the start of an MLB game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Brooklyn Dodgers. The spot was a simple graphic shape of the United States, as it was before the additions of Hawaii and Alaska, and a voice-over that said "America runs on Bulova time." Bulova paid just $9 for the ad.
