What is a flight confirmation number?

A flight confirmation number or record locator is the alphanumeric code assigned to a specific airline ticket when the traveler makes the reservation. Most flight confirmation numbers are six characters long and serve as a record in the airline's reservation system.

Upon booking a flight, the traveler receives the flight confirmation number. The number also appears on the boarding pass and on receipts for tickets or extras such as baggage fees. It serves as a reference number when contacting the airline or checking in for the flight. A customer traveling on two different airlines may receive two different flight confirmation numbers unless both use the same reservation system.
