What are flood plain maps?

A flood plain map shows not only bodies of water that flood, but the surrounding area that is prone to flooding as well. This allows communities, government agencies, such as FEMA, and scientists to understand the significant impact that flooding has on a given area.
Flood plains are considered to be high-risk areas and this is shown on flood plain maps. Over time, the boundaries of a specific flood plain may change due to erosion or a change in weather patterns. Commercial development also changes the boundaries of a flood plain. FEMA has published thousands of maps, which the public has access to. These maps help communities and families plan for flooding events.
