Does flour expire?

All types of flour have an expiration date. Regular flour, potato flour, cornmeal and rice flour generally last around six to eight months. Self-rising flour and whole wheat flour last around four to six months, and cornmeal generally lasts between nine to 12 months.
The best way to store flour is by keeping it unopened in its original packaging and placing it in an airtight container. Opened flour can be placed in a plastic bag and stored in an airtight container. While whole grain flour can be stored in the refrigerator or freezer, other types of flour should be kept in the pantry.
