Does foam in the urine indicate kidney problems?

An excess of foam in the urine and high levels of the protein albumin indicate a condition of the kidneys called proteinura, explains the Mayo Clinic. If protein levels prove to be normal after physician-administered tests, the concentration and speed of urine passage can account for a foamy appearance.

Doctors conduct a serum test to determine the level of albumin in the blood, with a normal range of 3.4 to 5.4 grams per deciliter, according to the National Institutes of Health. An adequately functioning kidney works to filter the body's waste but retain proteins necessary for sustaining bones, muscles, hair and nails.
