Two primary causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, according to the National Kidney Foundation. Glomerulonephritis is a condition that contributes to end-stage kidney disease.
Excessive use of some over-the-counter pain killers can also damage kidneys, reports the National Kidney Foundation. Analgesics such as ibuprofen and naproxen, when taken over long periods of time or in heavy doses, can contribute to a kidney condition known as interstitial nephritis. Taking analgesics in conjunction with alcohol increases the chances of developing kidney problems as well. In addition, use of illegal drugs such as heroin can contribute to the development of kidney disease.
