What food group are chickpeas in?

Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, are considered part of the protein group and the vegetable group on the food pyramid. Most other legumes, such as beans, split peas and lentils, are also included in these groups, as they have similar nutrient levels.
Chickpeas are included in the protein group because they are high in protein, iron and zinc, like other meat-based proteins. They also provide a number of other vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber, which is why they are also a part of the vegetable group. For a protein comparison, 1/2 a cup of chickpeas is equal to about two eggs.
