What are some foods that parakeets cannot eat?

Parakeets, and most birds, should not eat apple seeds, chocolate, avocados, onions and mushrooms. These foods can cause a variety of problems including liver failure and cardiac distress. Parakeets should also not be fed dried beans and tomato leaves. Foods such as chard or spinach are allowed in small amounts.

Examples of fruits and vegetables that parakeets can eat include grated carrots, parsley, apple and pear slices with the core and seeds removed and tropical fruits. Small pieces of meat, such as shredded turkey or chicken, are allowed in limited amounts. Parakeet pellets and seeds should be included to round out a healthy diet.
