What is the formula for calculating density?

The formula for calculating density is mass divided by volume (density = mass/volume). Density is a measure of how much mass an object has per a given volume. Volume refers to the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by an object.

If an object has a mass of 80 grams and a volume of 30 cubic centimeters, it is possible to calculate its density by dividing 80 by 30. The result is a density of 2.67 grams per cubic centimeter. Experts from the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility say water has a density of 1.0. Any object with a density less than 1.0 will float in water, while an object with a density greater than 1.0 will sink in water.
