What is formula transformation?

Formula translation is the spelled-out name of the acronym FORTRAN, which is a programming language that enables the translation of mathematical equations into computer code. FORTRAN was invented by engineers at IBM in the late 1950s and was the first machine-independent computer language.
FORTRAN facilitated the coding process significantly. Because it was the first high-level computer language, it eliminated the need to program in machine code and allowed programmers to spend the bulk of their time on solving problems instead of working on the coding process itself. FORTRAN also revolutionized the process of debugging code with its use of a compiler.
