Foot Locker, Inc. was founded in 1879 by Frank Woolworth. The company was known as the "Woolworth Corporation" until 1998. The first store was opened in Utica, N.Y.
The Woolworth Corporation originally began as a general merchandising store. The first store opened in 1879 was known as the “Great 5¢ Store.†The store’s success led Woolworth to open other branches in different locations.
Foot Locker, Inc. also opened additional specialty stores, including Lady Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, Footaction and Champs Sports. The company has branched out internationally to Europe, New Zealand and Australia. It is currently headquartered in New York City.
