Who founded New Hampshire?

In 1623, New Hampshire was founded by Captain John Mason, along with other Englishmen, in a land-grant from the Council of New England. By virtue of Mason's directive, the first British colony in New Hampshire was established near the Piscataqua River by David Thomson and his company.

New Hampshire was part of the 13 original British colonies and one of the New England territories. Originally named as North Virginia, the Crown established it as a royal colony and renamed the state after Hampshire County in England. Although Mason is generally acknowledged to be the founder of the colony, he died in 1635 and was unable to set foot on New Hampshire.
