The land that became New Hampshire was granted to Sir Ferdinando Gorges and John Mason in 1622 by the Council for New England. The first settlement on this territory was made in 1623 by a group of English fishermen led by David Thomson. They named this settlement Pannaway Plantation.
In 1679, a charter was issued for the royal Province of New Hampshire, and John Cutt was appointed as governor. The state was one of the 13 colonies that revolted against Great Britain during the American Revolution, and it was admitted into the union in 1788. Prior to European contact, the territory had been inhabited by the Abenaki and Pennacook tribes.
