The territory that became New Jersey was first explored in 1609 by Henry Hudson, who claimed the land for the Dutch and named it "New Netherlands." The first permanent settlement was the town of Bergen, which was founded in 1660.
The Province of New Jersey was established in 1664 under Governor Phillip Carteret. It was later among the colonies that rebelled against Great Britain during the American Revolution, and it declared itself an independent state in 1776. New Jersey was admitted into the Union in 1787. Prior to European contact, the region was occupied by tribes of the Lenape Indians.
