Simon Rothman founded eBay Motors in 1999, according to Car Gurus. By 2006, Rothman built eBay Motors into a company earning 14 billion dollars per year, which accounted for about 33 percent of eBay's total revenue.

Rothman joined eBay in early 1999 after graduating from Harvard and worked as a strategy consultant, Greylock Partners reports. When he joined eBay, it was still a small auction platform dealing mostly with collectibles. Rothman ultimately became the Global Vice President of eBay Motors, and he was also appointed the head of all of eBay's U.S. operations. During his tenure, eBay Motors became the top automotive marketplace in the world and one of the top 10 e-commerce sites.
