Clarence Saunders is the founder of the Piggly Wiggly chain of grocery stores. The first store was opened in Memphis, Tennessee in 1916.
Piggly Wiggly stores were innovative and paved the way for the growth of grocery markets and their convenience. Piggly Wiggly was the first store to offer checkout stands and registers. This grocery chain was also the first to put prices on each item being offered for sale. In 1937, Piggly Wiggly became the first store to offer customers carts to simplify the shopping experience.
Piggly Wiggly is headquartered in New Hampshire as of 2015. There are over 600 stores located in 17 states.
