The founder of Buddhism was Siddhartha Gautama, also referred to as Buddha Shakyamuni, who was a royal prince in a place called Lumbini. It is claimed that the suffering he witnessed on Earth made him to retreat to the forest to meditate with the intention of finding solutions.
While meditating under a Bodhi tree, Buddha achieved enlightenment after a period of 6 years. This led him to share wisdom from the Wheels of Dharma through the Hinayana and Mahayana teachings. His teachings became popular in Asia, especially India, and gradually spread to other countries. Today, Buddhism is one of the most popular religions, with many followers worldwide.
