The 13th-century Mongol Empire was founded by Genghis Khan, formerly known as Temujin. Between 1206 A.D.and the Khan's death in 1227, the Mongol Empire expanded from its base in the open country of Mongolia until it reached from the Caspian Sea to the Pacific Ocean.
The Mongol Empire began in 1206, when Temujin adopted the title "Genghis Khan" to denote his status as the leader of the newly unified Mongol nation. Over the next 20 years, Genghis led his people through some of the bloodiest wars in human history and established what would become the largest empire the world had ever seen.
