The four oceans of the world are the Atlantic, the Arctic, the Indian and the Pacific. In 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization named a fifth ocean, calling it the Southern Ocean.
The Southern Ocean includes water below 60 degrees south of the Equator. Both the Arctic and the Southern Oceans contain frozen water. The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean, covering over 155 million square kilometers. In comparison, the Southern Ocean is the smallest at 22 million square kilometers. The Mariana Trench reaches the deepest depth at almost 36,000 feet deep. The total area of water on the planet is 361.42 million square kilometers.
