How do you frame a basement wall?

To frame a basement wall, mark the position of the studs, assemble the frame on the floor, slide it into place, and secure with nails. Repeat for as many wall frames as necessary to complete the project.

1. Mark the position for the frame

   Hole a 6-foot level and a 2-foot level together so that one reaches the ceiling beam. Once both levels are plumb, mark that spot on the floor. Repeat at the other end of the beam and between any lally columns.

2. Connect the plumb marks

   Use a chalk line snapper to mark the line between all the plumb marks along the floor. Measure out 4 inches from the foundation wall, and snap another chalk line.

3. Cut the boards

   Measure the needed length for the boards. Transfer that measurement to a 2-by-4 pressure treated board and to a 2-by-four fir or spruce board. Use a miter saw to cut both boards for the plates.

4. Mark the location of wall studs

   Place both boards on their sides. Using a layout square, mark 16-inch on-center marks along both plates. Place both boards flat, and measure to the beam in three or four places. This is the height for the wall studs.

5. Cut the studs

   Using the shortest measurement from plates to beam, cut the wall studs with a circular saw.

6. Assemble the wall frame

   Place the plates on their edges but apart. Space the studs at the measured 16-inch intervals in between the two plates. Nail the studs through both plates to secure them in place.

7. Stand the frame up

   Making sure the plate made from the pressure-treated wood is on the bottom, stand the wall frame up. Slide the frame under the beam, using a hammer to tap the top plate into place.

8. Secure the frame

   Ensure the bottom plate is on the chalk line. Use a level to make sure the wall is plumb. Nail the top plate to the beam. Use a powder-actuated nail gun to shoot a nail between each pair of studs to secure the bottom plate to the floor.
