Freshwater eels eat small fish, worms, and crustaceans. Most eels are carnivores or meat eaters. They may also eat frozen fish food.
Eels do not eat very often. Usually they will eat every few days. They prefer to hunt and gather their food at night. Fresh water eels are bottom feeders. They will eat small creatures at the bottom of the aquarium such as mosquito larvae and worms. A few types of eel will adapt to eat frozen fish food such as blood worms and tubifex. The swamp eel can breathe air and will escape an aquarium if it is not left closed.
