Frozen shoulder is a condition where a person's shoulder joint has pain or stiffness; it is also called adhesive capsulitis, according to Mayo Clinic. This condition normally begins in slow increments, gets worse, and then returns to normal within one to two years.
The three different stages of frozen shoulder are painful, frozen and thawing. In the painful stage, movement causes pain, while the frozen stage is characterized by stiffness in the shoulder. The thawing stage indicates the point at which the shoulder regains range of motion and is easier to move. Doctors think frozen shoulder may be a result of an extended time of immobility or previous injury to the affected arm, notes Mayo Clinic.
