What is fuligo septica?

Fuligo septica is a slime mold that grows on stumps, logs and other living plants. The mold also appears on wood mulch and grows during the months of May through October.

Fuligo septica is sometimes referred to as scrambled-egg slime due to its frothy yellow appearance. The yellow crust of the mold breaks away to reveal a spore mass that is a muted black color. As the mold dries, it changes from a bold yellow hue to tan or beige. In some parts of Mexico, people gather fuligo septica and prepare it like scrambled eggs. The mold is also the inspiration for the 1958 science fiction movie "The Blob."
