The function of blood plasma is that of carrying the white blood cells, platelets and red blood cells suspended within it. It is the liquid portion of blood and is made up of a protein and salt solution. Plasma is 92 percent water, and it makes up 55 percent of the blood's volume.

Plasma helps with maintaining a proper pH balance and operates as the exchange system of both sodium and potassium within the body. In order for plasma to be obtained, it is separated from the other components of blood. When plasma is isolated from the rest of the blood components, it is light yellow in color.
