What is the function of the earthworm's crop?

The earthworm's crop is responsible for storing food after it has passed through the esophagus, which possesses calciferous glands that release calcium carbonate to help remove any excess quantities of calcium from the body. After the food has passed through the crop, it is then moved to the gizzard. The gizzard contains stones within it that are responsible for grinding the large food particles into much smaller particles for further digestion so that the nutrients can be absorbed by the intestines later on.

Earthworms have segmented bodies, and the crop is located close to the head and before the clitellum, which is a prominent, solid band responsible for reproduction.
