What is the function of a frog's pancreas?

In frogs and all vertebrates, the function of the pancreas is to produce endocrine hormones and digestive enzymes. The pancreas produces insulin, somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptides for the endocrine system, as well as pancreatic juices that break down lipids, proteins and carbohydrates in the stomach.

In frogs, the pancreas is located behind the stomach and intestines. It has the appearance of a narrow yellow ribbon and is located near the mesentery, which is a transparent strip of tissue that holds the intestines together. Although not all vertebrates have a distinctive pancreas, they do typically have some form of pancreatic tissue.
