The function of monocytes is to help the other cells in the blood remove damaged tissue. Monocytes also help destroy cancerous cells.

Monocytes are produced in the bone marrow and travel through the body in the blood. As the monocytes begin to travel, they enter major organs such as the liver and the pancreas. As the monocytes mature, they play a large role in the immune system. When the number of monocytes increases, it indicates that the body is trying to fight certain diseases such as cancer, infections or blood disorders. The monocytes multiply to try to fight off the bad cells.
