The function of the peritoneum is to support and cover the organs inside the abdomen. The peritoneum is a layer of tissue that lines the stomach.

On occasion, the peritoneum can become inflamed or infected, which requires immediate medical attention. Not only can the condition spread to other organs, but it can mix with the blood which leads to sepsis. The two main causes of the condition, also known as peritonitis, are injury to the abdomen or infection. The symptoms of peritonitis include stomach pain, fever, extreme thirst and fluid build-up in the abdomen. The conditions is life-threatening and should only be treated by a medical professional.
