The function of the premolars is to hold food. The premolars have cusps so that they can also crush food. The premolars are also known as bicuspids.
Each arch has four premolars – two first premolars and two second premolars. The first premolars are located next to canines, which are followed by second premolars. The maxillary first premolars have a bifurcated root. All other premolars have one root, one prominent cusp with one or two lesser lingual cusps. The permanent dentition starts at the midline and is made up of incisors, canines, premolars and molars. The primary dentition is exactly like the permanent detention, but it does not have premolars.
