What are the functions of the Larynx?

The three main functions of the larynx are swallowing, talking and breathing. It is usually 2 inches long, and is a member of the respiratory system, being situated between the trachea and pharynx.
The larynx contains an outer layer of cartilage on the front of the neck, which is commonly referred to as the Adam's apple. It also consists of two bands of muscle in the shape of a "V" that act as the vocal chords. The vocal chords become tighter and constrict when speaking while becoming relaxed for the duration of breathing. When an individual inhales, air enters the nose and mouth while going in the opposite direction when exhaling.
