What is a furnace draft inducer?

A furnace draft inducer is a blower that ventilates air in a furnace during combustion. It consists of an electric motor, a fan, an electric box and a metal sleeve.

The basic function of a draft inducer is to create a draft for safe and reliable combustion in a gas or oil furnace. When the furnace is turned on, the inducer expels any excess gas in the heat exchanger remaining from the last furnace cycle. The inducer also controls the amount of air that moves through the furnace's heat exchanger.

Common manufacturers of furnace draft inducers include Miller, Fedders, Fasco and Carrier.
