Fusion surgery done on the back is called lumbar spinal fusion. According to WebMD, this type of surgery is done to connect, or fuse, two or more vertebrae in the spine when the discs between them become herniated or deteriorate.
Two types of lumbar fusion surgery exist, according to WebMD. In the first method, a surgeon removes a piece of bone from the patient's own pelvis and attaches it to the injured vertebrae. This promotes new bone growth over the injured area. In the second method, metal implants are attached to the weakened area of the spine, also promoting new bone growth over the injured area.
