The Earth is located in the Milky Way galaxy. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy that has a radius of about 50,000 light years. A spiral galaxy is characterized by a bulge in the center with spiral arms wrapped around it.

The Sun and the solar system are part of the Sagittarius spiral arm and are located about halfway between the central bulge and the outer edge of the galaxy. The stars and other celestial bodies that make up the spiral arms, including the Sun and the Earth, are billions of years younger than the stars in the central bulge.
