What are galvanized nails made of?

A galvanized nail is a steel nail that has been coated in zinc to prevent corrosion. With hot-dip galvanizing, prepared steel nails are dipped in a bath of molten zinc and held there until the temperature of the metal is equal to that of the bath.
Hot-dip galvanizing causes a metallurgical bond to form between the two metals so that the nail is coated in a series of zinc-iron alloys. As a result, the nail is more resistant to rust and durable, making galvanized nails an excellent choice for outdoor construction. Nails can also be galvanized by electroplating or other methods.
