Why is it not recommended to paint over galvanized steel?

It is not recommended to paint over galvanized steel because of the poor surface adhesion properties of galvanized surfaces. Painting a galvanized surface is possible, but ensuring adhesion is difficult.

Galvanized surfaces are difficult to paint because of pretreatments, poor surface properties and variations in galvanizing procedures used by different manufacturers. Pretreatments applied to protect galvanized surfaces interfere with paint adhesion and must be removed before painting. Galvanized surfaces that are glossy and smooth require surface roughening, and care must be taken to avoid damaging the protective properties of galvanization. Variations between manufacturer pretreatments and processes complicate painting and lead to inconsistent results.
