Is it generally culturally acceptable for a female to kiss another female?

With gay rights in forefront of civil rights debates, homosexual couples are much more accepted in the community. However, despite this, public kissing, whether it's social or romantic, between people of the same sex is still not culturally acceptable in most communities, according to a 2012 New York Times article.

In reality, public consensus on kissing in public has little to do with a person's perceived sexuality. Most people are uncomfortable with the sight of two people kissing in a public place, regardless of whether the kiss is taking place between a man and a woman, two men, or two women. However, two women kissing in public would likely be accepted sooner than two men.
