Risedronate is the generic name of Actonel. As of 2014, it is approved by the FDA for treating osteoporosis and Paget's disease of bone. Available through prescription only, risedronate works by slowing down bone dissolution, thereby strengthening the bone and increasing bone density.
The recommended dosage of risedronate for osteoporosis in men and post-menopausal osteoporosis in women is 5 milligrams daily. For Paget's disease, the dosage is 30 milligrams daily for two months. The pills should be taken in the morning before meals with plain water only. Food should not be consumed for at least 30 minutes after taking the drug to avoid interference with its absorption by the body.
