Genetic testing is a type of test used to identify changes in chromosomes, genes or proteins, according to Genetics Home Reference. The test is used to confirm or rule out a suspected genetic condition.
Genetic testing can also be used to determine a person's risk in developing a genetic disorder and passing it on, according to Genetics Home Reference. Several tests are available. A molecular genetic test studies only a small segment of DNA, while a chromosomal genetic test, studies whole chromosomes or large segments of DNA. The biochemical genetic test looks at the amount and activity levels of proteins. Abnormalities in these can indicate unfavorable changes in an individual's DNA.
