Malaria is found in areas south of the Sahara desert, in parts of Oceania, and in warmer regions near the equator, as of 2015, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is transmitted in tropical and subtropical areas where temperatures generally exceed 68 degrees Fahrenheit.
As of 2015, nearly approximately 3.2 billion people were at risk of malaria, notes the World Health Organization. Sub-Saharan regions in Africa report the highest rate of occurrence, with over 89 percent of all malaria cases and 91 percent of malaria deaths. Although not as predominant, other affected regions include Asia, Latin America, Middle East and parts of Europe.
