What is the capital of Vermont?

The capital of Vermont is Montpelier. As of 2014, it has a population of about 8,000, making it the smallest state capital in the United States. The town was named for the French city of Montpellier after the French provided significant aid to the colonies during the American Revolution.

Montpelier covers 10.3 square miles, and the Winooski River runs through the town. The city has three public schools, one each for elementary, middle and high school students. Montpelier is also home to the New England Culinary Institute, the Vermont College of Fine Arts, the Vermont History Museum and the annual Green Mountain Film Festival.
