Delaware is situated in the Middle Atlantic region of the United States. Border states include Maryland to the west and south, Pennsylvania to the north and New Jersey to the northeast. It covers 1,954 square miles and is the smallest state after Rhode Island.

Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution. It achieved statehood on December 7, 1787. The First State is divided into three counties: Kent, New Castle and Sussex. The largest city is Wilmington, in the far north, while the capital of Dover is located in the central region. Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean sit along the state's eastern coastline.
