What documents do American citizens need to cross the Canadian border?

As of 2015, an American citizen over the age of 18 can pass in and out of Canada if he has a valid passport with him, according to USA Today. A birth certificate grants an American passage into Canada but does not suffice for re-entry to the United States.
Other documents that provide passage into Canada include a passport card, a NEXUS card or an enhanced driver's license issued by Michigan, New York, Vermont or Washington, explains USA Today. These forms of identification are also valid for a person re-entering the United States from Canada by land or sea. A person hoping to stay in Canada for more than six months requires a visa, and an American with a criminal record may need an entry waiver from the citizenship and immigration department.
