China has eight major languages and several other minor minority languages that are spoken by different ethnic groups. The major languages are Mandarin, Yue, Wu, Minbei, Minnan, Xiang, Gan and the Hakka dialects. Mandarin is the official language of China, but some of the languages are more popular in certain areas or among certain demographics.
Yue, also known as Cantonese, is the official language in Guangdong, and Zhuang, Mongolian, Tibetan, Uighur and Kyrgyz are official languages among some of the minority groups. As of 2010, there were 56 officially recognized ethnic groups in China, but 91.6 percent of the population identified as Han Chinese.
