A state map of Vermont indicates that there are nine cities in the state, although some maps show certain towns as cities. Five of Vermont's cities serve as the seats of their respective counties. These cities are Barre, Burlington, Newport, Rutland and the capital city of Montpelier.
The remaining cities in Vermont are South Burlington, St. Albans, Vergennes and Winooski. Vermont has 255 municipalities, with 237 officially designated as incorporated towns and villages. The remaining municipalities include four unincorporated areas and four unincorporated gores, most of which are in Essex County in the northeastern corner of the state. Nearly 20 percent of the state's population live in the nine cities.
