Mazatlan is on the western coast of Mexico. The city is located on the Pacific Ocean at the southern tip of the Gulf of California, which separates the main part of Mexico from the Baja California peninsula.
Mazatlan is the second-largest city in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, with a population of over 400,000, as of 2015. The city is nicknamed the "Pearl of the Pacific" and features beaches, seafood and a historic city center. Mazatlan is also famous for its annual carnival, which attracts over 600,000 visitors. The carnival is the third largest in the world, with only the carnivals in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans attracting more visitors.
