Somalia is situated in eastern Africa. It borders the Indian Ocean to the east and the Gulf of Aden to the north. Somalia is bordered by the countries of Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest and Kenya to the southwest.
The coastline of Somalia stretches for approximately 1,900 miles, making it the longest coastline on the mainland of Africa. Somalia covers a total area of about 246,000 square miles, making it the 44th largest country in the world. The capital and largest city of Somalia is Mogadishu, which is situated along the eastern coast. Somalia has a total population estimated to be around 10.4 million people, as of October 2014, making it the 85th most populated country in the world.
