Why do girls get cramps?

By Forinfos - 19/10/2025 - 0 comments

According to KidsHealth, some girls get cramps during their menstrual cycles due to chemicals in their bodies known as prostaglandins. These chemicals cause the muscles of the uterus to contract and cause painful cramps.

KidsHealth states that prostaglandins also help to push the excess blood through the uterus during a girl's menstrual cycle. The cramps caused by these muscle contractions vary from mild to severe, and not every girl experiences cramps with her period. Often the cramps last for only a few days during the girl's menstrual cycle and are easily managed by taking over-the-counter pain medications. If symptoms are particularly severe, see a doctor.
