The primary debate about plastic bottles being unsafe stems from the theory that carcinogenic compounds leak out of the plastic and into the water. A study by the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research of the Spanish National Research Council found that the carcinogenic compounds were insignificant and far less than the limits set for daily consumption. Only 5.6 percent of 6,516 bottles tested positive for these compounds.
