What are GMOs?

The acronym "GMO" stands for "genetically modified organism." These organisms are plants and animals that have had their DNA specifically engineered in a way that does not occur in nature. Many organisms are genetically modified so that crops are more resistant to pesticides, or to enhance nutrition profiles.
Genetically modified crops were first sold commercially in 1994. More recently, genetically modified foods have created controversy. Most experts believe these foods pose no health risk to the public. Many individuals oppose the use of GMOs due to safety issues, the environment and farmers' rights. There is a debate about whether a food that contains GMOs must include that information on its label.
