Arborvitae, privet, and rose of Sharon are commonly used for privacy hedges. These shrubs are relatively fast growing, and all respond well to pruning. Arborvitae can range from 10 to 60 feet tall, depending on the variety, but can generally be pruned shorter.
Arborvitae are evergreen and will not lose their foliage during the winter. Privet and rose of Sharon are deciduous and will lose their foliage during the winter. Rose of Sharon is in the hibiscus family and bears blossoms in the summer. The flowers come in white, pink, red, purple, and violet. Korean boxwood is another common evergreen shrub that grows 4 to 6 feet tall and can be pruned.
